Târgu Mureș (Marosvásárhely in Hungarian or Neumarkt am Mieresch in German) is located in Mureș county, in the heart of Transylvania. It was first mentioned in the papal tithes in 1334, as Novum Forum Siculorum (The New Szekler Market), named literally for a ‘market’ on Mures river. In the 17th century, it received the title of free royal city and it soon became an important cultural, religious and educational center for the Szeklers in Transylvania.
Târgu Mureș became a modern town in the second half of the 19th century, along with the expansion of the railway line. Today its centrally located Piața Trandafirilor (Roses Square) is lined with modern streetside cafes and restaurants, churches, and monuments.

The Palace of Culture – an outstanding masterpiece of early 20th century Secession building style, The Administrative Palace, The Synagogue, The Medieval Citadel or The Teleki Library – the first public library in Transylvania, opened in 1802.
If you stay here for a few days, do not miss the opportunity to visit some of the most important landmarks in the area, like the Medieval Citadel of Sighisoara – a UNESCO heritage site, the Rhédey Castle in Sângeorgiu de Pădure – where you will find out about HRH Queen Elisabeth II’s ancestors, you can visit the world’s largest heliothermic lake, the Bear Lake in Sovata or the imposing Teleki Castle in Gornești .
